With the help of the guys over at xs11.com, I figured out that a tiny dowel was missing that would not let me shift into fifth gear. Not sure what happened to it, but it is gone and a new one has been ordered.
Now I am working on the clutch lever, which is very hard to pull.
After the parts arrive I will reclean the carbs and start the bike up.
I hope.

as a "new" xs 1100 owner, i want to thank you immensely for this blog.
my bike is the bike i grew up on. my little boots would vibrate off as i would fall asleep sitting in front of my mom.
the xs11 has been sitting nearly 14 years in a garage, half full of gas, and wasn't ridden much the last years before being totally neglected.
i'm recovering the gas tanks and petcocks now. then we shall see what other problems spring up at me!
i too am looking to heavily customize the bike to more my tastes (rat bike for sure!)but i have a huge connection to this bike, and the tank (standard)remains. the bike will still have it's identity for me, and forever be something to remember my parents by.
again, thanks for this blog, it's going to help me out immensely over the next year or so.
Thanks Jason, you really need to register at XS11.com. They are the guys who will help you with your rebuild. I am on the site as DIGITALSAM. Let me know if you signup
